RMA worked alongside FK Gardner & Sons in a design and construct contract to deliver Toowoomba State High School’s Performing Arts Centre and sports field retaining wall. The new $9.5 million centre provides students with a performance stage, 500 seat theatre, classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and amenities. The scope also included design for relocation of outdoor sports courts and a 6 m high retaining wall structure around the sports oval.
RMA delivered the civil, hydraulic and structural engineering for the new centre and all external works. Our team was able to achieve significant cost savings on the steel and foundations in comparison to the original design completed by the previous engineer. This involved analysing the soil conditions and complex topography to provide tailored solutions for the building.
To manage a slip hazard at the sports field, engineering solutions for a sandstone block retaining wall required blocks to be laid at a specific incline which allowed single sized blocks to be used for all 6 metres of retainment.
